Smart Closet

I love fashion, but you know what? I’m not particularly good at it. I’ve got a cupboard full to bursting of clothes (and that doesn’t seem to stop me from adding to it when I see something I like!) and yet I always seem to wear the same two or three outfits. I’m lazy and unadventurous when it comes to dressing myself so a capsule wardrobe would probably make a lot of sense, but I get bored easily and I hate to think of all those lovely clothes that are already hanging in my wardrobe and never get to see the light of day.

About a month ago I downloaded an app called Smart Closet on a whim, hoping that it would help me regain a bit of control over my togs, and I have to say, so far I’m loving it! It essentially works as a database – a personal closet catalogue – allowing you to see what you’ve got (and haven’t got!), categorise it, create and plan outfits, and understand which items you get the most use out of. It takes a little bit of time to set everything up, but for me it’s been a game changer 🙂

✦ Create Your Closet. The most time consuming part of creating your own smart closet is inputting all the data, which basically involves chucking all your clothes onto the floor and taking a picture of each and every item you own – clothes, shoes, accessories, the lot. You can choose to categorise them by style, colour, brand (which makes searching for items in the app much easier), and you can even add a price to each item which – once you’ve added everything – will give you a total price tag for your wardrobe. Eek!

✦ Create and Plan Outfits. Once you’ve created your database you can start having some fun with the app. All those photographs you took can now be mixed and matched to create outfits for your Lookbook. Outfits can be categorised by occasions and seasons and added to a calendar which allows you to keep track of what you’re wearing. Another handy feature is that the app will alert you every morning suggesting a possible outfit for the day. Helpful when you’re in a rush, eh? 🙂

Packing Lists. A couple of weeks ago I went on a mini break to the New Forest and used the packing feature to help me streamline my suitcase. You can add outfits to your packing list and the app will list all the items you need to pack.

Statistics. Here’s the interesting bit. The statistics page in the app gives you a run down of your wardrobe in numbers. How many tops, how many dresses? How many outfits? How much does your entire wardrobe cost? And depending on how much information you put into the app, it can also tell you about your favourite brands, favourite colours, most used item and best value item. All handy info for when you’re planning a clear out or feeling spendy 🙂

Have you ever tried a closet app? What did you think of it?

Hehehe! I haven’t left any of my shoes where he can get at them yet! You can set it to track what’s “available” to wear or not, so that’ll come in handy when he tracks them down and punctures them all. 😣
